The Various Methods of Mold Sampling

After mould inspection, the next step is to carry out mould sampling. Mould sampling or mold testing is done in order to identify the extent of contamination by means of spore count and knowing the genera of molds. This testing can be done by three ways: air sampling, surface sampling and bulk sampling. In all these methods, the mold is basically cultured under specific environment.

In air sampling, the airborne particles are first collected and then grown in the standard solution. Swabs and tapes are sometimes used over which the mold is grown in open air. The air sample is then collected compared for inside and outside and this helps in finding the genera and the degree of contamination. Air sampling also helps to identify the invisible molds that are otherwise difficult to find. To collect the samples of air, vacuum sampling is usually employed.

In surface sampling, the mold o the surface is taken and then collected by means of swabs. This is then grown and then identified for the genera of mold.

In bulk sampling, the dust is collected from the damage or the infected areas and this is cultured in a solution to identify the level of contamination.
